PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light diffusing member which is excellent respectively in contrast and resolution of a rear projection type display, and to provide a transmission type screen provided with the light diffusing member. SOLUTION: The light diffusing member 50 comprises: a sheet-like lenticular lens part 10 in which a large number of convex cylindrical lenses 5 are formed in parallel to one another with a constant pitch P<SB>c</SB>on one side surface in the thickness direction; a light shielding pattern 20 which is arranged in a stripe shape on the other surface 10a of the lenticular lens part 10; a transmissive resin layer 30 formed so as to cover the other surface 10a and the light shielding pattern 20; and a light diffusion part which is formed by a transmissive resin 32 with light diffusing material 34 dispersed therein and is joined to the transmissive resin layer 30. When the refractive index of the convex cylindrical lenses 5 is n<SB>c</SB>, the proportion of the width of a stripe-shaped light shielding part 15 to a pitch Pc is A and the thickness of the transmissive resin layer 30 is T, the thickness T is selected so as to satisfy the following relation: T>[P<SB>c</SB>×(1-A)]/[2×(2+A)×tan(sin<SP>-1</SP>(1/n<SB>c</SB>))].
