<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically display an image matching music that a user begins to play or sing. <P>SOLUTION: This image display device has musical piece data of many musical pieces stored in a musical piece database D and also has image data of a moving picture, a plurality of still pictures, etc., prepared in an image database K according to each musical piece. When the user begins to play some music on a musical instrument or sing it, performance contents are input in the form of MIDI data (A to C), musical piece data having a tone series pattern matching the tone series pattern of the MIDI data are extracted from the musical piece database D to recognize the musical piece that the user beings to play or sing, the tempo, progress position (measure line timing etc.), etc., of the MIDI data are detected (E).
