PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a zoom optical system which can sufficiently achieve a thickness reduction as compared with the conventional zoom optical system and whose optical system total length can be more shortened, while securing adequate zoom magnification, and to provide an imaging apparatus equipped with the zoom optical system. SOLUTION: The zoom optical system includes a prism component P having an incident surface P1, a reflecting surface and an outgoing surface P3 in order from an object side, negative refractive power on the incident surface P1 and positive refractive power on the outgoing surface P3 and at least two movable groups G2 and G3 which are movable in either of a variable power operation or a focusing operation, and is composed of lens groups G1 to G4 having positive refractive power as a whole.
