The labelling device for labelling bottles and containers (2), with a knife carrier (10) which together with a vacuum cylinder (9) forms a cutting gap (15), has the drive for the vacuum cylinder and/or the knife carrier constructed so that at the moment of cutting, the cutting knife (14) and the counter-knife (13) which interacts with it, or the cylindrical surface (9.1) of the vacuum cylinder which interacts with the cutting knife, have the same or similar circumferential speed. An independent claim is included for a labelling machine which has at least one labelling device according to the invention.
