<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To maintain services with respect to passengers by using either one of an upper cage or a lower cage in accordance with physical characteristics of a hoistway, when the distance between the upper cage and the lower cage cannot be adjusted due to failure of a cage distance adjusting mechanism, a control device for adjustment between cages and the like. <P>SOLUTION: When distance adjustment between the upper cage 2 and the lower cage 3 cannot be performed due to failure of the cage distance adjusting mechanism 5, the control device 10 for adjustment between the cages and the like for any reason, the upper cage 2 and the lower cage 3 are landed on arbitrary floors by a car frame control device 9 to put down passengers. Then, use of either one of the upper cage 2 or the lower cage 3 is prohibited in accordance with the physical characteristics of the hoistway.
