PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a camera achieving the speeding-up of autofocus. SOLUTION: A first adjusting means is equipped with: a moving means to move the focus lens along an optical axis and take a moving completing position as a start position; a first search means to obtain a focus evaluated value of every step by moving the focus lens at a predetermined step in a reverse direction from the start position; and a first focusing means to move the focus lens to a focusing position in accordance with relation between the position of the focus lens and the focus evaluated value obtained. A second adjusting means is equipped with: a discrimination means to discriminate the moving direction of the focus lens where the focus evaluated value is increased; a second search means to obtain the focus evaluated value of every step by moving the focus lens at the predetermined step in the discriminated moving direction; and a second focusing means to move the focus lens to the focusing position in accordance with relation between the position of the focus lens and the focus evaluated value obtained. Then, the movable range of the focus lens is detected from a lens characteristic storage means by using the position of the zoom lens, and autofocus is performed by using the first adjusting means when the movable range thereof is smaller than a predetermined value, and using the second adjusting means otherwise.
