PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical pickup device equipped with a means for reducing current consumption without deteriorating performance during an operation. SOLUTION: This device is provided with a first reference current circuit for setting an operation current when the device is operated by a first amplification degree, a second reference current circuit for setting an operation current when the device is operated by a second amplification degree lower than the first amplification degree, and a changeover switch for connecting the first or second reference current circuit to the amplifier circuit according to a switching signal supplied from the outside. By setting the first amplification degree during reproduction and the second amplification degree during recording, necessary frequency characteristics and dynamic ranges are sufficiently secured for both recording and reproducing, and current consumption is reduced during recording.
