PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress an increase in the storage area of a storage part for storing parameters set for each head and/or magnetic disk regarding a magnetic disk device. SOLUTION: The magnetic disk device capable of setting the number of usable heads smaller than the maximum number of heads to be mounted, includes a storage means for providing a buffer area usable as a data buffer, a reading means for reading head information from a magnetic disk, and a control means for securing a predetermined storage area of the storage means for head information, based on the maximum number of heads contained in head information when the head information is stored, storing parameters set to be used in the secured storage area in the storage means, and releasing an area other than the area occupied by the parameters in the secured storage area as a buffer area.
