PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To facilitate disposition notification in an environment where an apparatus with a signature function and an apparatus without it are mixed. SOLUTION: In the E-mail transmission and reception apparatus, in making a disposition notification request, the disposition notification request is attached to an E-mail to be transmitted (S10 and S12). Whether or not a digital signature is attached to the E-mail is decided by a reception setting. That is, in the the E-mail transmission and reception apparatus, when reception of non-reliable E-mails is rejected, its own digital signature is attached to the E-mail to be transmitted (S16) and it is transmitted (S18); when the reception is not rejected, the digital signature is not attached to the E-mail to be transmitted.
