PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an energy absorbing structure for protecting an occupant of an automobile, which certainly protects a head portion of the occupant by providing a preferable load characteristic. SOLUTION: The energy absorbing structure for protecting the occupant of the automobile provided on vehicle body structure members 30, 32, 34 structuring a part of a vehicle body, comprises: an interior material 12 provided so as to cover a vehicular cabin side of the vehicle body structure member; a rib member 24 for absorbing collision energy provided between the interior material and the vehicle body structure member; a breakage inducing portion 68 formed on the rib member and breaking by colliding with the vehicle body structure members to induce the breakage of the rib member; and a regulating member 70 regulating the movement of the broken rib member.
