PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illumination optical system capable of adjusting a display picture to such luminance that the display picture is easily viewed without causing the deterioration of contrast and color reproducibility in the display picture or irregular luminance and irregular color, and a projection type picture display device. SOLUTION: A slide shutter 150 is provided on the incident side of a second fly-eye integrator 113. The slide shutter freely slides in an X-axis direction, and shields the width of the second integrator 113, thereby performing adjustment.
