PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a target distance detector for performing range-finding, based on information obtained by a single image sensor so as to miniaturize, reduce weight, and reduce cost lowering. SOLUTION: This target distance detector is equipped with an operation display unit 4 for displaying an image of a target which is a ranging object acquired by the image sensor 1, while making it possible to perform specified operations from the displayed image on the size of the target which is the ranging object; a target surface display area calculator 2 for calculating the target surface display area in a position where the target exists in the image displayed by the display unit, from the size of the target specified by the display unit, the number of total pixels of the image outputted from the image sensor, and the number of pixels in the longitudinal or lateral direction occupied by the target; and a distance calculator 3 for calculating the distance to the target, based on the display area from the area calculator and a view angle from the image sensor.
