A material for gas diffusion electrode comprising porous substance (1) composed of continuous or discontinuous polytetrafluoroethylene microfibers (2) and having three-dimensionally continuous micropores (4) and, retained by the porous substance (1), conductive material (3). The density of polytetrafluoroethylene microfibers (2) is lower in surface region (1A) than in middle region (1B) of cross section of the porous substance (1). By virtue of the use of polytetrafluoroethylene with given three-dimensional structure, etc., there can be provided a material for gas diffusion electrode excelling in power generation performance and durability.
