The present invention provides a novel mercaptobenzimidazole substituted benzotriazole UV absorber having the general formula I wherein R<SUB>1 </SUB>is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, halogen, C<SUB>1 </SUB>to C<SUB>12 </SUB>alkyl, linear or branched alkoxy group, R<SUB>2 </SUB>is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, C<SUB>1</SUB>-C<SUB>8 </SUB>alkyl, cyclopentyl, cyclohexyl and cumyl, R<SUB>3 </SUB>is a hydrogen atom or a linear alkyl group, particularly a methyl group or an ethyl group and X is a hydrogen atom and a process for the preparation thereof.
