PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electric cylinder of a type that can incorporate a spring unit, of which the entire length can be shortened. SOLUTION: An electric cylinder 1 comprises a motor 2, outer cylinder 5, lead screw mechanism 6 that is arranged in the outer cylinder 5 to convert rotation of a motor 2 into linear motion, spring unit 15 that is arranged in the outer cylinder 5 to energize a ball screw 7 of the lead screw mechanism 6 in axial direction, rod 12 that is connected to a nut unit 11 of the lead screw mechanism 6 and moves forwards or backwards, together with the nut unit 11 in axial direction, non-excitation operation type electromagnetic brake 20, and a control unit 31 for controlling the motor 2 and the non-excitation operation type electromagnetic brake 20. The non-excitation operation type electromagnetic brake 20 is arranged between the motor 2 and the lead screw mechanism 6. A motor shaft 3 is fixed to a brake hub 26 of the non-excitation operation type electromagnetic brake 20. The ball screw 7 is connected slidably, in the axial direction, to the brake hub 26, so that the rotation of the motor shaft 3 is transmitted to the ball screw 7 via the brake hub 26.
