PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide electrodes of an electrolytic cell, which can maximize an electrolysis efficiency by minimizing a reaction resistance at electrodes and a voltage loss due to an internal resistance of an electrolyte solution in a water electrolysis apparatus. SOLUTION: In a water electrolysis apparatus 1, an electrolyte solution 5 as a reactant is continuously and smoothly fed into an electrolytic cell 1 so that bubbles 10 formed at electrodes 8 positioned on both sides of a diaphragm 4 move out of the electrodes. The electrodes 8 are surface-treated with a porous nickel alloy. It is desirable that the porous nickel alloy is constituted so as to have a powder grain size of 10 to 50μm.
