The method involves selecting a multimedia-data stream from a set of multimedia-data streams and transmitting the selected data stream to a subscriber-sided communication device e.g. set top box, that is assigned to a communication network. The data streams are partly stored in the network, where a position of reference information contained in the streams is recorded for each stored stream, and one of the data streams is selected from the recorded position for transmission to the communication device. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a communication system for transmission of multimedia-data streams over a communication network. (2) a decentralized communication device for transmission of multimedia-data streams.
