A coating material consisting of a low- or medium-molecular organic compound represented by the general formula (1): [Chemical formula 27] (1) [wherein R₁ is a single bond, methylene, ethylene, or oxygen; and R₂ is hydrogen; a hydrocarbon group which may be substituted with hydroxy, carboxy, amino, amido, imido, glycidyl, cyano, a fluorocarbinol group, sulfo, or sulfonylamido; fluorine -containing alkyl; a cyclic group having an aromatic or aliphatic group; or a composite thereof, which may contain fluorine, oxygen, nitrogen, silicon, or sulfur, or R₂'s which are the same or different may be connected by an ester linkage, an amide linkage, an ether linkage, a thio-ether linkage, a thio-ester linkage, or a urethane linkage]. The compound can be derived from a diol compound and bicycle- [2.2.2]octane-2,3:5,6-tetracarboxylic anhydride.
