<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer capable of reducing a time period for a spooling operation and reducing a memory capacity for page data in the spooling, and a method for controlling the printer. <P>SOLUTION: When this printer 20 receives print data in a PDL format from a host computer 10, it determines whether or not a development time period for developing to bitmap data can be within a time period for printing one page by an engine section 28 by each page in the print data, and then spools the page data of which the development time period is within the time period for printing one page in the PDL format.
