摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an alkaline storage battery having high discharge characteristics, high cycle characteristics, and high capacity by containing a rare earth-Mg-Ni system hydrogen absorbing alloy having high hydrogen releasing characteristics, high corrosion resistance to an alkaline electrolyte, and high oxidation resistance in a negative electrode. <P>SOLUTION: The alkaline storage battery is equipped with a positive electrode 3, a negative electrode 4, an alkaline electrolyte, and an additive. The composition of the hydrogen absorbing alloy contained in the negative electrode is represented by general formula: ((PrNd)<SB>&alpha;</SB>LN<SB>1-&alpha;</SB>)<SB>1-&beta;</SB>Mg<SB>&beta;</SB>Ni<SB>&gamma;-&delta;-&epsi;</SB>Al<SB>&delta;</SB>T<SB>&epsi;</SB>. In the formula, Ln represents at least one kind selected from the group comprising La, Ce, or the like, T represents at least one kind selected from the group comprising V, Nb, or the like, and subscripts &alpha;, &beta;, &gamma;, &delta;, and &epsi; each represents a number satisfying 0.7<&alpha;, 0.05<&beta;<0.15, 3.0&le;&gamma;&le;4.2, 0.15&le;&delta;&le;0.30, 0&le;&epsi;&le;0.20.
