PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging apparatus that generates a beautiful color image signal even at a dark place in the imaging apparatus having an image pickup device in the color filter configuration of Bayer array, can form a high-grade live view color image or a moving picture, and can reduce the effect of smear by a high-luminance object, and to provide a method for driving an imaging device. SOLUTION: When the imaging device is driven in a live view mode, or a moving picture mode, signal charge, which is generated by a plurality of pixels in which the same kinds of color filters are arranged in a plurality of pixels in which a plurality of kinds of color filters are arranged, is read to a plurality of vertical transmission sections each, and the read signal charge is added in a slanting direction for generating signal charge.
