ILLUMINATOR, BACK LIGHT DEVICE, AND LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY

In an illuminator (1), fluorescent tubes (11) and LEDs (12) having different polarization characteristics are arranged alternately along the X direction in the illumination plane. Light sources of identical quantity of light are arranged at such a pitch as substantially uniform quantity of light can be obtained even in the vicinity of the end portion in the X direction for the fluorescent tubes (11). The LEDs (12) are arranged such that substantially uniform quantity of light can be obtained in the vicinity of the end portion by providing an LED (12B) of smaller quantity of light as compared with that of the LED (12A) at the end portion in the X direction. Consequently, an illuminator ensuring uniform quantity of light over the entire illumination surface can be attained.
