PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic transmission which provides optimal shift down timing with considering deceleration and engine rotation speed. SOLUTION: This transmission is provided with: a means detecting deceleration; a means detecting engine rotation speed; a means storing peak Ne which is a peak value of engine rotation speed during period of travel with one predetermined gear position; a map for defining sift downΔNe from the deceleration; and a means executing shift down when engine rotation speed drops from the peak Ne by shift downΔNe. Since the shift downΔNe is set at a smaller value as the deceleration is larger, shift down is executed at higher rotation speed as deceleration is larger. A timer inhibiting shift down for a predetermined period of time is operated when the engine rotation speed drops from the peak Ne by shift downΔNe.
