PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a heat insulation material which is spongy, can be vacuum-formed into an optional shape, is low in cost, extremely excellent in heat insulation effect, eliminates shape change over a long time, maintains an excellent heat insulation effect, is light in weight, good in portability and handling ease, and recyclable. SOLUTION: The heat insulation material is produced by employing an inedible portion of grass and/or a mesocarp portion of coconut, as raw materials, and subjecting the raw materials to heating and carbonization.
