The method involves providing a radar system and determining frequency shift between transmitted and received radar waves, where speed of an object (16) is determined from phase positions of the received radar waves. A portion of a surrounding of a motor vehicle is determined in a time segment, and distances for the object in another portion of the surrounding are determined in another time segment. An independent claim is also included for a radar system of a motor vehicle.
