A piezo multi-layer actuator (PMA) spring applies a pre-tensioning force to a piezo multi-layer actuator forming part of an automotive high pressure fuel injection system. The PMA spring has two or more sprung shanks (3) between end closures (4, 5). The spring shanks have a longitudinal Z-fold, such that when the spring is under tension, the center section (7) exerts thrust.
