A system (100) for detecting electrolysis in an automobile system includes a probe (320), a microcontroller (400) electrically coupled to the probe (320), a power supply (410) configured to supply power to the microcontroller (400), a ground lead (120), and an optical indicator (115, 115') operationally coupled to the microcontroller (400). According to one embodiment, the microcontroller (400) is configured to read a voltage across the probe (320) and the ground lead (120) when the probe (320) is inserted into a coolant fluid and the ground (125) is coupled to a ground source (615), analyze the voltage, and illuminate the optical indicator (115, 115') in response to the voltage analysis.
