PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display panel which has a fast response speed and high transmissivity. SOLUTION: The display panel is equipped with an upper substrate 36 and a lower substrate 30 which face each other, a medium layer 35 held between both the substrates, and a pixel electrode 34 and a counter electrode 32 provided on the lower substrate 30. A medium which shows optical anisotropy when no electric field is applied and varies in extent of the optical anisotropy when an electric field is applied is charged in the medium layer 35, transparent electrodes are used as the counter electrode 32 and pixel electrode 34, and the interval between the counter electrode 32 and pixel electrode 34 is made shorter than the interval between the upper substrate 36 and lower substrate 30.
