PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ink jet printer in which stabilized printing is ensured at all times for any image or print mode, and substantial time required for printing is prevented from prolonging as much as possible by minimizing the frequency of suction recovery operation. SOLUTION: In the ink jet printer comprising an ink jet print head and a suction recovery unit for stabilizing ejection state of the ink jet print head, the dot density of a subsequent print image is taken into account in addition to the operation stop time of the ink jet printer, and a decision is made whether suction recovery operation is performed normally or not based on the information of the operation stop time and the dot density.
