PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader capable of surely grasping a photoelectric conversion element possibly causing an image failure due to defective linearity, and to provide a manuscript holder thereof. SOLUTION: The image reader for reading an image from a manuscript is characterized in to include: (A) a light source for illuminating the manuscript; (B) a plurality of photoelectric conversion elements for generating electric charges of an amount corresponding to a received light quantity; (C) a read data generating section for generating read data of the image on the basis of the amount of the electric charges generated by the photoelectric conversion elements by the received light when the light source illuminates the manuscript; (D) a discrimination section that discriminates whether or not any photoelectric conversion element is defective on the basis of the amount of the electric charges generated by the photoelectric conversion element when the photoelectric conversion element receives the light of a prescribed quantity during the period after application of power and till the reading operation; and (E).
