PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a free-piston engine capable of detecting pressure in a combustion chamber without causing the unnecessary increase of volume of the combustion chamber. SOLUTION: The side end face 65 of the combustion chamber in the piston head 22a of a first piston 22 formed into a hollow structure is thinned in thickness compared with the other wall faces, and a strain gauge 66 is loaded on an inner wall. The signal line 67 of the strain gauge 66 is wired in a first pressure chamber through a through-hole 22d penetrating axially into a plunger shaft 22b.
