PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely start an engine while suppressing the power consumption of a battery even in the engine having a hydraulically driven intake valve timing variable mechanism. SOLUTION: In this method for starting the engine, the engine is started by cranking the crankshaft of the engine (1) by a motor (2). The device for starting the engine comprises a pump (22) for pressure-feeding oil using, as a drive source, the rotating force of the crankshaft. An integrated controller (31) contains a motor rotational speed control processing procedure for controlling the rotational speed of the motor during cranking according to the hydraulic pressure of the oil force-fed by the pump (22).
