PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve a machine knitting needle by making a latch needle to be usable at higher speed. SOLUTION: The knitting needle has a convex or at least non-concave shank contour defining the inner contour of a hook starting from a hook 3 and extending between the hook 3 and a latch bearing 9, and an end 18 is placed directly adjacent to the concave inner contour of the hook. Consequently, the ascending angle necessary to surpass a yarn 23 positioned in the hook 3 in the case of sliding over the shank does not increase at any point of the shank contour 17. Preferably, the angle slowly decreases. Accordingly, the angle takes the maximum value in a space defined by the inner hook contour 15 or in a space defined by the perpendicular line L or L1 dropped from the tip end 12 of the hook or a tapered part 11 to the needle back 16 or, when the needle back is not parallel to the moving direction of the machine knitting needle, to an arrow defining the moving direction.
