Legibility of a character is enhanced by making the feature portion of a character distinguishable while ensuring a sufficient line space. In a character pattern generator (10), a regulation means (11) regulates the coordinate position of a reference line, i.e. an auxiliary line common to the arranging direction of at least one character, for indicating the feature of the profile of a reference character pattern, in the direction perpendicular to the arranging direction of at least one character in the objective reference character pattern based on reference line coordinate information indicating the feature of the profile of a character determined for each specified character size. For the coordinate position of a regulated reference line, a calculation means (12) moves or deforms the objective reference character pattern by performing coordinate calculation on each stroke constituting that character pattern.
