PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image communication apparatus that can acquire a NAPTR resource code from the domain server of ENUM according to an inputted destination number for confirming whether the destination number inputted by a user is the number of a desired communicating party without any input errors, and can prevent erroneous communication to an erroneous destination caused by a wrong input when using a numeric keypad to input the destination number, and to provide a method for controlling the image communication apparatus. SOLUTION: In the image communication apparatus 100 the destination number of a communicating party is received from an operation/display section 105; a domain name transmission section 161 converts the destination number to a domain name that is address information in an ENUM format for inquiring to DNS190; and a FAX section 120 starts image communication to the destination number when the NAPTR resource code is acquired from the DNS190 at a NAPTR-RR section 162.
