PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fixing device capable of preventing contamination of a recording medium and an image defect by surely removing from a cleaning blade refuse such as paper powder passing by a blade edge downstream, and an image forming apparatus which uses the same and has simple constitution at a low price. SOLUTION: Disclosed are the fixing device which has a cleaning blade 155 operative to freely contact and leave a peripheral surface of at least one fixing rotary body 153 between a pair of fixing rotary bodies 151 and 153 and has a fixing rotary body cleaning mode in which the blade front edge 155a of the cleaning blade 155 is pressed against the peripheral surface of the fixing rotary body 153 to clean the surface of the fixing rotary body 153 and a blade cleaning mode in which a opposed surface 155b of the cleaning blade 155 which faces the fixing rotary body 153 is pressed against a peripheral surface of the fixing rotary body 153 to clean the opposed surface 155b, and the image forming apparatus which uses the fixing device.
