A heart rate meter comprises a heart beat detecting section for detecting a heart beat waveform of an organism and a signal processing unit (4) for detecting a heart beat from the heart beat waveform. The signal processing unit (4) is composed of a heart beat signal generating section (5) for generating a heart beat signal by adding a predetermined frequency characteristic to a signal in a predetermined narrow band of the heart beat waveform and a heart beat detecting section (6) for detecting the heart beat from the waveform distortion added to the heart beat signal by the heart beat signal generating section. The heart beat signal generating section (5) removes the noise component in the frequency component other than the main component of the heart beat waveform by signal-processing the signal in the predetermined narrow band of the heart beat waveform and generates a heart beat signal having an amplified signal intensity of the frequency band by carrying out a signal processing of adding the predetermined frequency characteristic. The heart beat detecting section (6) detects the waveform distortion added to the heart beat signal by the heart beat signal generating section. Even if the measurement condition varies and thereby the signal characteristics such as the frequencies and the wave heights of the fundamental wave, the harmonics, and the noise component included in the heart beat waveform varies, the heart beat can be accurately detected.
