PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a power transmission apparatus which is capable of reducing a shock due to the contact of a speed changing clutch while securing durability of a lock-up clutch. SOLUTION: The power transmission apparatus 1 is provided with a fluid coupling 2 having a built-in lock-up clutch 7 and a speed changing clutch 3 arranged between an engine E and a transmission T/M, and a control section 29 which carries out control such that the lock-up clutch 7 is separated at a start time and is coupled after the start, and the speed changing clutch 3 is separated or coupled at a speed changing time. In this case, the control section 29 carries out control such that the pushing force for coupling the lock-up clutch 7 is decreased until the speed changing clutch 3 separated once at the speed changing time is completely coupled, and after the speed changing clutch 3 has been completely coupled, the pushing force for coupling the lock-up clutch 7 is increased to the former state.
