An ultraviolet absorber containing, as active ingredient, a zinc oxide solid solution of the formula (1),
€ƒ€ƒ€ƒ€ƒ€ƒ€ƒ€ƒ€ƒ (Zn) 1-x M 3+ x-´ O·nSiO 2 €ƒ€ƒ€ƒ€ƒ€ƒ(1)
wherein M 3+ is at least one trivalent metal selected from Al 3+ , Fe 3+ and Ce 3+ , 0 < x < 0.2, 0.001 < n < 0.2 and ´ is a cationic lattice defect,
in which solid solution the surface of a crystal is chemically bonded to a silicic acid,
which solid solution has an average secondary particle diameter of 1.5 µm or less and a BET specific surface area of at least 40 m 2 /g.
