The device has active regions arranged next to each other and adapted for generation of radiation. A lateral dimension of the active regions is varied in a lateral direction and/or distance of adjacent active regions is varied in the lateral direction. Side surfaces (9, 10) laterally define the device. The lateral dimension is larger than a lateral dimension of other active regions. The active regions are arranged on a common substrate (3).
