A method of treating putrescible cakes to reduce E. Coli and odour present in the cake and prevent further odour generation comprising the step of maintaining the cake under substantially anoxic conditions in the presence of a nitrate moiety at a pH at least 7 for a period of a day or more, the cake having a solid content of at between 20% to 75% by weight. The cake may be maintained under anoxic conditions in the presence of both ammonium and nitrate moieties. The nitrate may be provided by at least one of any nitrates of iron, calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium and ammonia. The ammonium moiety may be provided by at least one of urea or ammonium salts of mineral acids, such as carbonate, nitrate or sulfate. The cake may be waste material derived from sewage treatment, food processing or a fermentation process. Alternatively the cake may be an animal by-product. The pH of the cake may be adjusted with a hydroxide that includes the oxide or hydroxides of potassium, magnesium or calcium.
|
