An N-time pad (NTP) is a one-time pad (OTP) used in security-related tasks in situations where reduced security requirements allow the re-use of the data in the pad. Each application wishing to use the pad data is assigned a security rating (mA), with the highest security rating being equal to 1. Each data block in the pad has an associated usage count (x) which shows the number of times that block has already been used. Prior to accessing the pad data, an application's security rating is compared with the usage count. If mA>x, the application may access the data block, however if mA & x, access to that block is denied, and the next block in the pad is considered. Other methods of determining the usage count are also disclosed.
