A lightweight vertically rotating wind turbine is disclosed. The turbine includes a tapered wind-collecting base, a vertically rotating shaft 1 having top 10 and bottom plates 4 at either end, a number of flat rotor blades 2 attached between the plates and spaced around the shaft to form a cage, and vertically oriented wind directing stator blades 5 adjacent the outer edges of the rotor blades. The bottom end of the shaft is connected to an energy transfer element 11 that is connected to an energy utilising device 12. The turbine further includes an open cover 10A formed from concentric braces including two side bearings, and a top shield having a central pivot point and an outer terminus above the side bearings. The open cover allows wind from the direction above the turbine to be harnessed, while the top shield creates a calm area between the shield and the top of the rotor cage.
