An apparatus for the liquefaction of a natural gas stream containing methane and heavier hydrocarbon components is disclosed. The apparatus includes one or more first and second heat exchange means, first and second expansion means, a distillation column adapted to separate the natural gas stream into a volatile residue gas fraction containing a major portion of methane and lighter components and a relatively less volatile fraction containing a major portion of heavier hydrocarbon components, dividing means, and control means adapted to regulate the quantities and temperatures of feed streams to the distillation column.
