A hybrid lighting system

A hybrid lighting system (10) is disclosed. The hybrid lighting system (10) includes (a) at least one light collector for generating an output of fluorescent light in response to collected solar light. The light collector includes an optically transmissive material (12) that is doped with dispersed dye molecules which are arranged to absorb the solar light and to emit the fluorescent light, and (b) at least one electrically powered light emitting device (14, 16) that is arranged to emit a fraction of the total amount of lumens generated by the system (10). In use, the electrically powered light emitting device (14, 16) supplements the output of the light collector to provide light of a predetermined spectral characteristic.
