The mechanism, comprising a catch (6) fitted in an opening of a motor vehicle body cross-member to receive a locking bolt on a door, is enclosed in a housing (9) with spring-loaded plates (11a, 11b) that cover the catch when the door is open. When the door is closed two projections on either side of the bolt press down on the plates, which move apart as they are guided by angled slots (14) to expose the catch.
