The procedure for preparing a substrate with at least one polymer surface that is oriented and nanostructured consists of brushing the surface while the substrate is in an amorphous form and placing it in contact with vapours of a solvent such as acetone, toluene, chlorobenzene, tetrahydrofurane or cyclohexanone. The procedure can include a preliminary stage for determining the conditions needed to produce a given degree of roughness on the polymer surface following the application of the solvent. This includes brushing a series of identical substrates in identical conditions, and applying identical solvent vapours at the same temperature but with a duration varying from one substrate to another. The polymer can form the whole substrate or a surface film on an inert substrate e.g. of glass or metal.
