Disclosed herein are tetrahydroquinoline compounds of formula (I), their salts and isomers thereof, which are suitable as muscarinic receptor agonists, wherein the variables are as defined in the specification. Also disclosed is the use of these tetrahydroquinoline compounds of formula (I), pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof, stereoisomers thereof, or a pharmaceutical composition comprising either entity, for the preparation of a medicament for the treatment of diseases or disorders associated with a cholinergic receptor or ligand thereof, wherein the diseases or disorders are selected from the group consisting of Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, schizophrenia, Huntington's chorea, Friederich's ataxia, Gilles de la Tourette's Syndrome, Down Syndrome, Pick disease, dementia, clinical depression, age-related cognitive decline, cognitive impairment, forgetfulness, confusion, memory loss, attentional deficits, deficits in visual perception, depression, pain, sleep disorders, psychosis, sudden infant death syndrome, increased intraocular pressure and glaucoma.
