In an automotive process to operate an automatic gearbox and clutch, during deceleration the gearbox automatically changes down from e.g. a third gear to a second gear. The change is accompanied by disengagement and re-engagement of the clutch. While the clutch is disengaged, the automatic system esp. effects a brief reduction in engine speed, to effect a steady reduction in vehicle speed.
