The method involves determining a regulating step of a gear by using a control device and indicating the regulating step to a driver of a motor vehicle, where the control device stays in connection with all components of the motor vehicle. Fuel consumption minimizing position of an accelerator pedal is determined. An energy balance of the vehicle is indicated to the driver. Energy consumptions over a time period and/or over a covered path are graphically displayed. Fuel consumption is minimized with an automatic speed control by observance of a preset speed of the vehicle.
